So, I was supposed to have a Hotcake Hustle 10k race recap scheduled for today, but Friday night I was alerted that the race was going to be postponed due to icy road conditions. Let me back up a little bit. Friday afternoon is started snowing. In Texas this happens every few years or so, but when it does, we shut down both mentally, and traffic wise. Cars start driving like the Benny Hill theme song is on the background, and everything is a wacky mess. Thankfully the area I live wasn’t heavily impacted, but apparently the roads in Addison (where the race was to take place) was a slippery gamble, so the race directors called it early and went ahead and rescheduled it for January 21st. I was really excited to get out there and run for a couple of reasons. One being that I purchased a Garmin Forerunner 10 with some Christmas money last week and have yet to try it out, and two, I’ve been killing it on the treadmill this past week and was excited to see how/if it improved my outdoor running speed. I have been anti-treadmill for the past couple of years, and vehemently stayed away from me. Strangely enough when i first started running in 2012, I was all about it. I would only log a couple of miles at a time, but the treadmill was never daunting to me.
Then, about two years ago my Dad and I joined an outdoor running club that met on weekends, and I replaced treadmills with lake views. When Jake and I moved into our apartment last year, I attempted to get back into the treadmill game in our apartment gym, but I am almost certain that my apartment gym’s treadmill is older than me by 10+ years, and the entire machine feels at risk for shutting down any time someone steps foot on it. Not to mention, the only thing to stare at in that gym is yourself because of the giant mirror in the front of the room. The last thing I want to see while running is my reflection lip-synching to Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” (my running playlist is trash, you guys).
Cut to last week when Jake and I decided to join an actual gym (equipment that isn’t nearly 40 years old! What a concept!), and I’ve been able to re-learn to love the treadmill. I started off slow with a 1.5 mile run last Friday, and then this past Monday I stepped up to 3.5 miles. I logged 2.5 miles this Friday, and then four miles on Saturday (what should have been race day)! I know my New Year’s resolutions were to devote more time to yoga (and I already have! I went twice last week, woo-hoo!), but I think I may tack on an additional resolution of logging more weekly miles now that I feel more confident running on my once feared enemy! Jake and I are currently shooting for our gym days to be Sunday-Tuesday (with Saturday if due to weather or laziness I don’t drive down to Grapevine for weekend run club), so I’m thinking I can log my miles on those days, and then hit up yoga on Wednesdays and Thursdays! Here’s to hoping that the dreadmill, er, I mean treadmill and I can be better friends in 2017!
What is your least favorite machine at the gym?
