I’ve done plenty of running playlists on the blog (Please see here, here, here, and here.), but have yet to put one together for lounging and reading! I thought I’d put together a small mix that fits perfectly with oversized sweaters, window opened weekends, and something to drown out the noise from your boyfriend screaming at football (as I am currently).
I specifically associate this song with reading as when I moved into my apartment senior year of college and didn’t have wifi (or A/C…in July), I listened to the entirety of Bon Iver’s (at the time) two albums on repeat while I read books to pass the time until I finally had an internet. What did I read? The Carrie Diaries series, but that’s not important.
Aside from the Jake Gyllenhaal cameo, my favorite takeaway from The Lonely Island’s “Iran So Far” was the background melody from Aphex Twin. I can’t promise you won’t think of Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a date when you hear this, but it is wonderful.
An ex-boyfriend once put this on a mix CD for me after we broke up (What a great way to incite mixed signals btw) and while I was very confused at the gesture, I did walk away with a lifetime favorite. I don’t normally like to listen to a song with lyrics while I read, but I’ll make an exception for this one. Also, this song will break your heart in like 20 different ways so I apologize if have mascara face after listening.
I recommend this song for anyone who hasn’t seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, because if you haven’t then you will not fall into a tailspin of despair thinking about the movie whenever you hear this song. However, the piano melody in this one is A+ and unexplainably autumnal.
I couldn’t pronounce the title of this song even if a million dollars and an engagement ring from Jude Law was on the line, but it is magnificent! Sigur Rós creates hauntingly beautiful music and is perfect for any activity in which you’d like to turn your brain off: sleeping, reading, watching Fox News.
I had this song on a study playlist in college, so the second I hear it I immediately think of Fall 2009, back when I was a sophomore and thought I was super cool for listening to post-rock instrumental. Silly me, I wasn’t cool at all!
I will be the first to tell you that the movie Black Swan is a nearly two hour incarnation of a panic attack, but along with the performances (Where was Barbara Hershey’s Oscar???) the soundtrack is equally phenomenal. While of the songs on the soundtrack crafted by Mansell carry the same amount of manic intensity as the film, this song dials it back a bit, and is great to both enjoy and have on in the background.
What are your favorite songs/genres to listen to while reading?
