Decision making isn’t really my strong suit, case in point, my “bright idea” to run two 5k races in one morning this past Saturday. My logic that it would be just like running a 10k, but I guess the break in between, and the fact that humidity outside was comparable to that of the Amazon rainforest left me feeling like it much more of a challenge by the time I was halfway through the second 5k. Will I do it again? Probably not. Am I mad that I did it? Seeing as how I got a super cool medal at the Plano Balloon Fest 5k, and a giant beer stein at the end of the Oktoberfest 5k, uh no! I’m going to have to take an epsom salt bath every night this week to recover, but it was worth it! Now as for today’s recap, since I’m doing a “twofer” (two for one deal, it’s a made up word just go with it!) I’m going to condense the format a little, that way no one here has to read a thesis and we can all just look at pictures instead. Sound good? Cool, let’s get to it.

The Plano Balloon Fest 5k course was the same as last year’s, as it took place entirely on road, and wove through a local park and turned back around on a loop (my least fav). The course was mostly flat, with a couple of tiny inclines, and thankfully had wide enough lanes to cater to the 2000+ runners, strollers, and dogs that all participated!
The Okterfest 5k took place at my absolute favorite course, the Trinity River Trail that sits beneath downtown Fort Worth. This course is also home to The Pumpkin Spice 5k and One Ale of a Trail, and it’s my #1 spot for two reasons:
- It is 100% flat.
- This duck wearing a cowboy hat that was floating the river:
The PBF 5k started a little after 7:30 am, and before mile 1 I was already drenched with sweat because of the thick humidity. Despite that I was sweating like it was my job to disgust everyone at the event, I felt okay and kept a steady pace. However, for the next race…
The Oktoberfest 5k started off okay. It was overcast, and still a little humid before the start time of 10:15 am. I felt okay until about a mile and half in when my stomach started have a case of the “Nope Not Today!” activity, and I knew it would be best for myself, and anyone else around who isn’t into public displays of vomiting, if I just cool it and walk the rest of the way. Thankfully I was able to kick back into gear for the last half mile or so of the race, but maaaaan. It was a rough time, y’all.
After I crossed the finish line, I caught up with my Dad and best friend, Stefan, who finished 10-15 minutes before me because life is unfair, and was met with a free breakfast and lots of goodies. Stefan wasn’t running the second 5k, so my Dad and I didn’t have a ton of time to stick around, not that it mattered anyway since the hot air balloon launch was cancelled (just like last year!), so there wasn’t much to see. Oh well. Stefan and I had to settle for taking a photo in front of a Remax balloon.
While I did feel like death was imminent after completing the Oktoberfest 5k, I knew I had to stick around to score my free beer stein, and observe the festivities! In natural Mallory fashion, I couldn’t finish my beer, but definitely took a picture with it.
The post race Oktoberfest activities were in full force by the time the race was over, with beer vendors galore, German music, and people dressed in costume. I asked my Dad, who lived in Germany for a few years back in the day, if he felt like he was back in Germany at a traditional Oktoberfest, he said no, so if you’re looking for an authentic experience maybe not hit up Fort Worth next year to celebrate, but if you’re like me, don’t care, and love any excuse for people to listen to polka music and clink beer steins, then I 100% recommend it!
Moral of the story, don’t run two 5ks in one day unless you get free beer at the end, or unless you have an iron stomach. Also, I signed up for another Oktoberfest 5k for two weeks from now, so tis the season for free beer and Lederhosen for this girl!
