Try as I might, I am not the kind of runner who can run in silence. I’ve tried it, hated it, and have since made sure that I have headphones with me at all times, and a playlist readily available. When designing a running mix, without fail, my girl Beyoncé always make’s the cut. Mainly because I wish we were friends in real life (although I feel like I would never be invited over because I’m the kind of idiot who will spill spaghetti on your couch), but also because she is perfect running playlist material. Personally, my criteria for an ideal playlist plays out as follows:
- 90’s jams, which is achieved thanks to the trifecta that was B, Michelle, and Kelly (and like three other girls that mysteriously disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle. I have no idea what happened to them).
- Female empowerment (See entire Beyoncé discography).
- A good beat (See reason above).
With the recent release of Lemonade, as well as her new tour, and my logic on capitalizing on something relevant for the sake of the blog, I thought I’d share of my favorite Beyoncé running jams on the blog today! I’ve included some music videos and audio below, so feel free to get your Queen B jam on while you read!
- Countdown (4)
The entire album 4 reads like a beautiful love letter to Jay-Z. Sadly two albums later B would take on a different tone, but if you want to reminisce on time when we weren’t confusing Rachel Roy with Rachael Ray, and you’re looking for an upbeat song that’ll ease you into the next mile, then this is the jam for you!
- Formation (Lemonade)
Aside from this song touching on some really great themes and important messages, my favorite verse of ” I dream it, I work hard, I grind ’til I own it.” is my absolute favorite part and takes my workout or run from 0 to 60 every time I hear it. (Also, the official video isn’t available on Youtube, but check out that awesome choreography!)
- Partition (Beyoncé)
I would not advise listening to this song if you are in the same room as your parents, but man I love it. There’s a weird break involving what sounds like real audio from Parisian paparazzi, but if you can look past that then it’s still a great song to run to. Also, congrats to B and Jay keeping the magic alive in the back of a limo…
- Halo (I Am…Sasha Fierce)
This song is great if you are looking for a beautiful piano melody, a cool drum solo, and maybe a good cry while on your run.
- Upgrade U ft. Jay-Z (B’Day)
I love this song mostly because it reminds of me the time I accidentally purchased the Spanish version of this album at a Half Price Books in high school. That story really won’t help with your run, but I promise it’s a great song!
- Freedom ft. Kendrick Lamar (Lemonade)
*Stefon voice* This song has everything. A powerful message. An unavailable music video because of Tidal. B’s vocal range. Kendrick Lamar. A beat you can keep in time with while running, or maybe not. I was in band for nearly seven years and I still can’t keep time even if you set to metronome to 40 bpm and clapped in front of my face.
- Lose My Breath (Destiny’s Child, Destiny Fulfilled)
This song was chosen for two reasons: 1. I could not complete this list without honoring Kelly and Michelle, and 2. There’s a freakin’ drum line in this song! Personally, I like to use this time during my run to think about all of the Tina Knowles contributions to the Destiny’s Child wardrobe. Remember when she was making all of their clothes? Started from the bottom now there’s Dereon.
